Ask the darcy

A lovely person asked:

Why is your food problematic?

Via the Ask the Darcy button on the home page!

Let me tell you!

It is a line from the TV show Firefly.  River Tam says it when she is trying to eat an Ice Planet, a frozen thing on a stick, and she keeps trying to bite it and it keeps floating away from her, so she says “My food is problematic”.

River is a super genius in the show, which I am not.  She is also a trained assassin, which I am not.  But she is awkward, blunt, honest, has a hard time understanding the world and people around her, is unapologetically herself without being influenced by anyone else, does what she wants and what she thinks is right, surprises people by getting shit done when they assume she can’t, she has a unique way of speaking, and she sometimes disappears into her own brain.  She can be very naive. I can identify with all of that very much.

The problem with the character is that she is created to be every nerd boy’s fantasy, and not in a good way.  She is infantilized and childlike which is a gross thing that men tend to be attracted to.   She is absolutely gorgeous, and she has superhuman capabilities in terms of fighting, thinking, moving, and predicting the future.  I don’t like there is this character I identify with so much who also has these extreme qualities that make her a caricature of what men are attracted to.
